Mexico, Migrations & Missouri

Catalog description

In this course we explore the rich history of interaction between Mexico and the Midwest, Mexicanos and this region, with a focus on the state of Missouri and the city of St. Louis. Along the way we will learn more about Mexico and its history vis-à-vis the United States. We pose these interactions through the lens of migrations: geographical migrations, cultural migrations, and most importantly, the stories of people who have migrated, classified in the broadest possible terms as “migrants.” Along the way we will consider how the concepts of belonging, cross-cultural transitions, and intercultural communication affect the ways in which we view and engage with people who are different from us, and we will consider how our own unique life experiences as well as new learning can help us answer these important questions for our communities now and in the future.
