SPAN 4290
Introduction to Latin American Novel
Saint Louis University · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
This course serves as a broad introduction to the Latin American novel: students explore the lives and works of diverse Latin American novelists throughout the semester as a lense into contemporary Latin American society. Through this exploration students will gain insight into the historical, biographical and socio-political contexts in which these writers are and were creating, while building skills to critically analyze and discuss their creations. The novels we selected for this course are compelling in terms of their storytelling capacity and multi-media impact: various film versions of the works we read give variety to the course and time to think about the counterpoint of film and print. In this course we will explore the possibilities of reading novels for pleasure while also refining our critical reading skills in Spanish. Taught in Spanish.
