Introduction to The Américas

This course is an introduction to major themes in the history and culture of The Américas, understood as a region encompassing South, Central, North America and the Caribbean. Each installation of the course will highlight the trajectory of 2 Latin American countries from the 19th century to the present, to gain deeper understanding of the realities facing currently facing Latin America. Students will reflect on identity, revolutions, nation-state formation, modernization and social mobilization using primary sources such as cinema, music, literature, art and historical documents, as well as secondary sources. We integrate history, testimony, journalism, literature and film to discuss national and regional identities; US Latin American relations; and dynamic cultural practices through a chronological and thematic exploration of The Américas. This interdisciplinary study offers a unique insight into the lives and thoughts of people across our entire shared hemisphere. Taught in Spanish.
