Catalog description

This advanced clinical elective offers fourth-year medical students a unique, immersive experience in the field of organ donation and transplant medicine. Conducted at Mid America Transplant (on-site Donor Care Unit and dedicated Recovery Operating Room), students will engage in the continuum of care from donor referral through organ recovery. This rotation emphasizes the integration of clinical excellence, ethical decision-making, complex logistics, and inter-professional collaboration in a high-stakes, time-sensitive environment. Students will participate in donor management, surgical observation, research opportunities, and systems-based approaches to improving donation and transplantation outcomes. In addition to responsibilities in the Donor Care Unit and Recovery OR, students will gain exposure to the broader ecosystem of donation services within Mid America Transplant. These experiences are designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the multifaceted work and logistics that support donation and transplantation.
