Catalog description

This elective will serve as an introduction to the field of general surgery and surgical subspecialties. This course will have a single individual study day consisting of case modules to introduce the student to trauma and general surgery topics. Other sessions will consist of an introduction to the operating room and trauma bay and hands on skills labs. Topics to be covered in the skills labs include introduction into scrubbing/sterile technique, knot tying, surgical instruments, and basic suturing techniques. The students will participate in a cadaver lab to learn intra-abdominal surgical anatomy. They will also have a clinical observation experience in the operating room with general surgeons or surgical specialists. The final session will be a panel discussion on surgical career options and being a competitive applicant with residents and faculty members of various specialties.
