Dostoevsky Through the Centuries

For almost two centuries, Fyodor Dostoevsky’s oeuvre has been mined for political, religious, and psychoanalytical commentary on the human condition by psychologists, philosophers, theologians, and fellow artists who consider their contribution to the Christian tradition, existentialist literature, psychological realism, and political philosophy. Over the course of the semester, students will engage writings by such authors as Sigmund Freud, D. H. Lawrence, and Nikolai Berdyaev to arrive at solutions to complex issues raised by Dostoevsky in Notes from the House of the Dead, Crime and Punishment, and The Brothers Karamazov that are addressed by a range of disciplines.
