Catalog description

Recognizing the importance of texts, this course will cover oral and visual elements of effective communication: e.g. oral/audio qualities, graphics, data visualization, layout, and other aspects of communication that contribute to conveyance of information and enhanced understanding. The course will consider what communication scholarship tells us about effects of different visual and audio formats, media and channels, and how they shape understanding. The class will invite students to take a critical stance to consider how digital and new media shape communication and information exchange between individuals, and in organizations, communities and society. The class seeks to build practical skills in digital design, communication and marketing for social impact.
