The Structure of Poverty in the U.S.

This course examines the structural causes of poverty at the global and local levels from a multidisciplinary perspective. The course focuses on the social, political, and economic structures that produce and perpetuate poverty. The local dimension of the course predominately focuses on the national programs addressing poverty within the United States. Students will also discuss the historical and continued poverty within the St. Louis area. The course compares Organisation for Economic Co-Operation and Development (OECD) countries to the United States to better understand the various features of national-level programs and their effects on their respective populations.
