Mass Incarceration

Catalog description

This class is an introductory survey course on the topic of mass incarceration in the United States. The course addresses many of the issues connected to the more than tripling of the incarceration rate in America since the mid-1970s, particularly keeping an eye to developments in Missouri and the city of St. Louis. By the end of the course, students will be familiar with the major debates and relevant scholarship on the carceral state and especially attuned to the political nature of these issues.
