Catalog description

The earliest Jesuits have much to teach us about how to pray, think, and serve according to the Jesuit “way of proceeding.” Through autobiographical texts they wrote, we can still glimpse, and learn from, the interior lives of some of the earliest Jesuit companions. In this course, we will read together the private, spiritual diaries of Ignatius of Loyola and Pierre Favre, as well as a public autobiographical text of Peter Canisius. Setting their reflections in their historical context, we will discuss how these texts can help us to better understand Ignatian spirituality and Jesuit mission not simply as it has been written about, but how it is lived.
