Catalog description

The Student will function as a sub-intern, assuming the primary care of a limited number of high-risk and convalescing neonatal patients under the direct supervision of a senior resident and neonatologist. This experience will afford the student an opportunity to learn the pathophysiology and basic approaches to the evaluation and management of disease states affecting neonatal patients. General medical issues of critically ill patients; delivery room management, and the care of the normal newborn will be addressed. The transitional state of the normal newborn is emphasized. Communication skills with families with a sick newborn are stressed. Night call will be four times in three weeks. The educational setting is a 30 bed NICU, the Newborn Nursery and high-risk maternity service. These student will keep a log of patients cared for during the rotation to promote a comprehensive experience consistent with the stated objectives. The students will be evaluated by the.
