LAW 8713
Child, Parent, State
Saint Louis University · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
Child, Parent, State will look at the complex relationship between children, parents, and the State. The focus will be on state intervention due to allegations of abuse and neglect. We will examine the laws and polices that drive our nation’s treatment of children who are deemed to be in need of care. Using the child welfare system as our main frame of reference we will wrestle with questions such as: What are children’s rights? Where is the line between parents’ rights and children’s rights? What is the responsibility of the state in intervention in parent/child relationships? Should the state play a role in intervening in these relationships? What does lawyering for children and parents in this system look like?.
