Economic Integration in the European Union

The EU’s unprecedented political experiment in economic cooperation has resulted in a vast internal market accounting for 15% of the world’s trade in goods. To achieve the benefits of political unity and increased competitiveness and living standards, strict rules of non-discrimination apply with very few exceptions for Member States to enforce their interests and values. The jurisprudence of the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) aims at achieving a ‘social market economy’ characterized by balanced economic growth, full employment, and the protection of the environment. The course provides an overview of European integration with an emphasis on the economic driving forces and internal market law. Following an introduction to the substantive law and the CJEU jurisprudence on the market freedoms, students will actively solve real cases that emerged in the internal market. Finally, some insights into the political and economic consequences of Brexit will also be shared.
