Clinical Ethics Practicum
Saint Louis University · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
This course provides students an opportunity to observe the work of a hospital ethics committee and learn ethics consultation skills. Students will be expected to complete asynchronous pre-work including watching recorded lectures and reviewing handouts on ethics mediation skills, ethics consultation notes, and clinical ethics principles. They will then attend an introductory lecture and discussion session with the instructor and join an ethics committee meeting (scheduled on the second Tuesday of each month). If an ethics consult is received during the two-week interval, students will be invited to participate in the ad hoc committee meeting. By the end of the first week, students will be expected to submit a written review of one of several ethics policies provided by the instructor. In the second week, students will meet with the instructor to practice ethics mediation skills through multiple simulated cases. Students will receive feedback in person from the instructor.
