The course examines the exchanges, economies, and entanglements generated by early modern empires, which have shaped the world down to our own day. These developments include the emergence of global capitalism, the rise of new forms of enslavement, the diffusion of religious belief systems, the pursuit of empirical knowledge, the buildup of military technology, and the formation of new hybrid cultures around the world. No prior coursework or knowledge of the course is necessary to take this course and to excel in it.
