Manifestos

Catalog description

The manifesto does not ask for permission, it makes demands. It does not wait for incremental adjustments, it asks for change now. In this course, students will read manifestos from the seventeenth century to the present to understand how this demanding, impatient genre has been taken up by artistic and social movements including workers’ movements, feminism, DADA and surrealism, LGBTQ rights, movements for civil rights, conservatism, prison abolition, and more. Working collaboratively, students will write their own manifestos on issues of their choosing and present them both in class and to a wider public.
