Please note: Students should have taken Internal Medicine and/or Surgery clerkships prior to taking this course. This elective will provide Emergency Medicine exposure with primary patient care experience under supervision. Students will have a varied clinical schedule that covers a variety of days, nights, and weekends, totaling 96-120 hours in three weeks. We will try to honor two requested days off, based on priorities, but no more than two. One or more of the student's shifts may be at one of our other community hospital partners. They will participate in procedural techniques as well as in the initial evaluation and treatment of a wide range of emergency conditions. They will also have an opportunity to participate in an optional EMS observational shift. This course is also designed: To provide clinical patient contact with exposure to a wide range of emergency conditions and procedural techniques in a variety of settings. To broaden the students' knowledge of emergency medical services (EMS)/pre-hospital care and the role that EMS plays in the practice of Emergency Medicine.
