Methods for Teaching Emergent Bilingual Learners

This course explores research-based methods and instructional strategies for effectively supporting emergent bilingual learners (EBLs) in diverse educational settings. Emphasizing asset-based and culturally responsive approaches, students will examine language acquisition theories, bilingual development, and the sociocultural factors that shape language learning. Participants will collaboratively learn to design and adapt instruction that promotes academic achievement while honoring students’ home languages and identities. They will engage in shared inquiry, dialogue, and problem-solving with peers and mentors to address real-world challenges facing emergent bilingual learners. Key topics include scaffolding techniques, formative assessment for language learners, family engagement, and collaboration with multilingual support services. Field-based experiences and case studies will connect theory to practice, preparing educators to advocate for and empower bilingual learners across grade levels and content areas.
