Includes early reading concepts including vocabulary, comprehension and fluency. Incorporates instructional strategies for reading, writing, and integration of the arts in language and literacy development. Addresses language acquisition in relation to literacy development, and diversity of communication styles in families and cultures. Introduces language acquisition for emergent bilingual learners. Critiques curriculum as a value-laden democratic enterprise.
