Socio-Cultural History of American Education

Catalog description

The course will examine the social, political, and economic contexts that formed schools in the United States. We will address schools in the broader American cultural context with particular attention to policies, programs, institutionalization, group interests, and the impact of educational changes and movements. Through a critical inquiry, we will explore how structural racism and systemic oppression shaped schooling experiences in the past and present. By the end of the course, students will situate contemporary societal issues in a historical context to re-envision equitable approaches to addressing the diverse needs of schools in our communities.
