Catalog description

This course introduces students to principles of effective speaking with a focus on culturally responsive healthcare communication and messaging. Though the course is designed for those who will regularly engage with patients, all students—as healthcare users—will find value in the skills being taught. In this course, we will examine how culture is inherent in all aspects of healthcare communication, identify key communication skills, and explore how communication barriers harm marginalized communities in healthcare settings. Over the course of the semester, students will learn how to create speeches, adapt technical information for a general audience, and construct visuals that enhance their verbal communication.
