Psychiatry Residency Preparation Course (Elective Capstone)
Saint Louis University · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
This advanced non-direct patient care elective serves to ensure SLUSOM graduates entering into psychiatry residency will be confident and well prepared on day one. The course will be based on peer reviewed literature about psychiatry residency preparation courses, which exist widely both in medical schools and residency programs. This course will solidify core psychiatric skills such as the mental status examination, psychiatric interviewing, case formulation, approach to psychiatric diagnosis, conceptual competency in psychiatry, suicide risk assessment, management of acute agitation, assessment of decisional capacity, and an introduction to psychotherapy. Participants will also attend didactic sessions led by various members of SLUSOM's department of behavioral neuroscience and other community leaders to provide foundational knowledge about the various psychiatric sub specialties (child/adolescent, consultation-liaison, forensic, geriatrics, addiction), as well as how psychiatry interfaces with other community stakeholders (community health organizations, patient advocacy groups).
