Latino USA: An Introduction

Catalog description

This course introduces students to the social, economic, political, and cultural histories of Latinos in the United States. The first half of the semester focuses on the historical experiences of Mexican Americans, Puerto Ricans, and Cubans, while the second half widens in scope to analyze the histories of Latinos from South and Central America and the Caribbean. Topics include cultural and geographic origins, imperialism and colonization, economics of migration, work, gender, sexuality, and the politics of national identity. By the end of the course, students will have a greater understanding of Latino history and its influence on U.S. society.
