Catalog description
This course examines American art from the colonial era through the mid-twentieth century. Special emphasis is placed on how artists were affected by the unique sociocultural circumstances of the new nation. As the course progresses, we will see how the development of the art of the United States closely paralleled the rapid growth and advancement of the nation on the world stage, from its humble beginnings to its present position as a world power. This course is mutually exclusive. Students may not take both 2700/3700 for credit. ARTH 2700 and 3700 students attend the course simultaneously.
