Catalog description

This course offers students an immersive academic and personal experience taking place both in the classroom as well as in the urban environment. In exploring the artistic and social implications of cultural practices such as art making, photography, films, literature, visual arts as well as urban culture, urbanism and social movements based on Madrid, students will critically examine the relevance of current debates concerning arts and modern life in a multicultural city. A portrait is more than the mere capture of likeness. Portraying a city means also to manifest an aesthetic and a personal engagement with your own distinctive cultural environment. In taking this course students will create their own innovative and personalized portrait of Madrid while reflecting on the aesthetic and social dynamics that constitutes it.
