Catalog description

According to theologian David Tracy, the theologian is responsible for serving three publics: the academy, the church, and the wider society. This claim, a challenge to theories of secularization, requires critical, rigorous analysis of the realities of public contexts and what resources and insights theology has to offer them. In this course, students will learn about what it means for theology to go public, to engage these wider conversations, and to bring the resources of the theological tradition to bear on relevant public questions.
