Catalog description

This course assesses the Communication and Understanding for English Language Learners (ELLs) (CU), Methods of Teaching (MT), ESOL Curriculum and Materials Development (CM), Testing and Evaluation (TE) ESOL strands from Florida ESOL Teacher Standards (2025). The course will cover topics related to the learning of academic content and language for ELLs, methods of teaching and ESOL requirements and practices including knowledge of Florida's educational statutes and rules in the identification, instruction, and progress monitoring of ELLs. Additionally, the course will cover English language acquisition and development and applying evidence-based practices to deliver instruction that supports and accelerates English language acquisition, as well as standards-based instruction for ELLs to meet the needs of varying English proficiency levels. The course will also assess critical knowledge in the key factors and considerations for assessment of ELLs. A field experience of 25 hours working with ELLs over the course of the semester is a required part of this course.
