Catalog description
This course will provide pre-service teachers with knowledge and skills that focuses on developing their knowledge and skills from the ESOL strands from Florida ESOL Teacher Standards (2025) including Communication and Understanding for English Language Learners (ELLs) (CU), Applied Linguistics (AL), Methods of Teaching ESOL (MT), ESOL Curriculum and Materials Development (CM) and Testing and Evaluation of ESOL (TE). The focus of this course is on the following topics: learning of academic content and language for ELLs specifically how to collaborate with families, schools, and larger communities to engage ELL's families in supporting their children's education and encourage parental rights and involvement, applied linguistics and understanding language as system, methods of teaching ESOL and ESOL requirements and practices including the identification, instruction, planning and standards-based instruction for ELLs, as well as identifying appropriate accommodations for assessments and progress monitoring tools to evaluate ELLs. A field experience of 20 hours working with ELLs over the course of the semester is a required part of this course.
