Catalog description
This class is an authentic research experience in partnership with the Howard Hughes Medical Institute [HHMI] SEA-PHAGES program. This class was specifically designed for freshmen students, including those without the experience of an introductory biology course, however, all students are welcome to take this class. During this class students will learn and master research-based laboratory skills. Students will isolate and characterize soil bacteriophage using microbiology, virology, molecular biology, electron microscopy and aseptic techniques. Students will also learn various other laboratory techniques such as notetaking and experimental problem solving. Students will isolate their own phage, will name it, and have their own dedicated web page. This is a lab-only class that meets for 4 hours weekly [2 x 2 hours] and is worth 3 credits. A lab fee will be applied. This class is offered in the Fall term only.
