Northern Ireland: War&Peace?
Saint Joseph's University · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
This course will investigate the complexity of conflict and its transformation in Northern Ireland. We will explore the (1) nature and sources of violent intercommunal conflict, (2) how and why a peace movement emerged and almost 30 years later an agreement was struck, and (3) the nature and sources of conflict transformation after the agreement was reached. We will use social science theories and concepts about internal state conflict and its transformation to describe, understand, and explain what has happened. At the end of the semester, we will compare the case of Northern Ireland’s conflict transformation with a small subset of others.
