History of Graphic Design

Catalog description

This course explores the evolution of graphic design through the dual lenses of historical movements and social justice. Students will examine key design movements, including Art Nouveau, Bauhaus, Modernism, Postmodernism, and beyond, while analyzing how categories of race, class, gender, sexuality, ethnicity, religion, and ability intersect within those movements. The course will also highlight contributions from LGBTQIA+, BIPOC and non-Western designers often overlooked in traditional design histories. By investigating the role of graphic design in both reflecting and challenging social inequalities, students will gain a deeper understanding of design as a tool for advocacy, resistance, and empowerment. This course will deliver a design history experience through readings, discussion, lectures, activities and creative projects.
