Catalog description

This course is an introduction to the creation of ceramic objects by hand and the many ways that using clay as an art form has impacted the history of humankind. Through assigned projects and regular studio practice, students will learn how to build objects with clay using ceramic handbuilding techniques, basic wheel-throwing techniques, ceramic surfacing and kiln firing methods, and concept development. Classes consist of technical demonstrations, lectures on historic and contemporary ceramic objects and artists, practice time, and critiques. Students will begin to understand the essential components of a well designed and finely crafted ceramic sculpture or vessel through assigned projects, group discussions and a gallery visit.
