Catalog description

Examines the history of visual culture in Europe and North America from the invention of Photography to the end of the second world war. Topics covered include the following: Realism, Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, Symbolism, Cubism and its responses, Expressionism and its responses, Surrealism, International style and North American Regionalisms. Looks closely at significant theoretical constructs such as the Avant Garde, Modernism, Art Criticism and Patronage (institutional and private). Examines the effects of new technologies on the development of art during this period; most importantly photography and film.
