Catalog description

This course examines the reading specialist's role in planning, developing, and evaluating reading programs. Major topics include evaluation of components of an overall reading program, organization of reading programs and professional development strategies to improve the teaching of literacy, planning and conducting staff development activities, collecting of standardized data as a means of monitoring and determining the reading achievement of students, planning and preparing district materials, selection and evaluation of commercial materials, and budget planning. Candidates complete a supervised school-embedded internship, a literacy needs assessment, and a plan to lead a professional development session in strategies for remediation of writing for all learners. Candidates also complete peer coaching sessions.
