Catalog description

This course emphasizes the importance of literacies across the content areas in grades 6-12 and remedial literacy instruction for adolescents. Special emphasis is given to various models of reading and writing for adolescents. This course will focus on understanding and implementing differentiated instruction in the English language arts to meet the needs of students, and it is tailored for students in reading specialist, STEM, and humanities programs. Candidates in this course will learn literacy skills unique to disciplines, including selecting diverse texts from diverse genres, integrating technology, facilitating vocabulary development and comprehension abilities, and writing. Candidates begin studying literacy strategies for supporting adolescent multilingual learners and readers who need support.
