Catalog description

This course explores the broadening nature of literacy and literacy instruction. It addresses both the theory and pedagogy of literacy instruction, including comprehension, vocabulary, phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, and writing studies. Teacher candidates explore how to design emergent and developing literacy instruction across the age span in PreK-6 classrooms. This course has a particular focus on designing literacy instruction for culturally and linguistically diverse students that positions the literacy teacher as a reflective practitioner with a focus on teaching for social justice.
