Introduction to Queer Theory

This course is an introduction to queer theory, a theoretical approach that relies on deconstructing the idea that cis-heteronormative paradigms are the natural, neutral default. The first half of this class will explore the foundational theorists of queer theory, giving students a grounding in its history and development. The second half will look at the applications of these theoretical moves in the field of Religious Studies, examining how queer theory has affected academic disciplines such as biblical studies and theology, as well as its impact on contemporary practice among religious and nonreligious individuals alike. This course serves as the foundational course for the Queer Theory CUGS. It also fulfills the Rowan Core Humanistic Literacy and the Rowan Experience Broad-Based Literature requirement.
