Mathematics for Elementary Teachers: Shapes Space and Data Analysis

Catalog description
This course explores the critical areas of teaching geometry, measurement, and data analysis for elementary teachers. Drawing on current research and best practices, it covers teaching key mathematical concepts such as spatial reasoning, measurement, data analysis, probability, and data literacy in. Teacher candidates will engage with problem-solving instruction, assessment, and remediation strategies, integrate literacy skills, and utilize mathematical practices in their teaching based on NJ students learning standards. Additionally, students will learn how to integrate technology to teach math effectively. The course supports NCTM Catalyzing Change recommendations by broadening the purposes of learning mathematics, fostering equitable structures, implementing equitable instruction, and developing a deep mathematical understanding for K-3 and 4-6 students.
