Parallel and Concurrent Programming

Catalog description

Concurrency and parallelism are both used with respect to multithreaded programming. This course will cover techniques on improving performance and/or responsiveness based on topics in parallel programming and concurrent programming. Such topics may include optimizing the underlying parallel resources of a particular machine (such as multiple cores), machine clustering, synchronization mechanisms (such as locking), responses to simultaneous occurring events, processes and multithreading, context switching, race conditions or shared-memory multiprocessors. Students will be expected to do significant programming tasks in a language that may be new to them and be prepared to learn and apply this language throughout the course.
