Catalog description

Sport and social activism have always been closely intertwined, with some of the most prominent figures throughout history, as well as in the modern athletics world, using their platforms to speak out about issues they care about. From Muhammad Ali, Billie Jean King, Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf, LeBron James, and Megan Rapinoe, the social impact of athletes has been wide-ranging and significant in its scope. This course examines how sport has been used as a vehicle for social impact, change, equality, and justice. Using communication and media theories as the base, we will examine historical and contemporary events to see how various people (and entities) have used, and continue to use sport to foster change within society.
