Clinical Microbiology

Clinical microbiology is an introductory microbiology course for nursing students and students training for careers in the allied health fields. The course anticipates minimal background knowledge and instead provides an overview of relevant introductory concepts from biology, biochemistry, cell biology, genetics, microbiology, and molecular biology. Launching from these introductory topics the course presents microbiology as it is applied to promoting health, preventing infection, and treating disease in both individuals and populations. The course follows the recommended curriculum guidelines for Microbiology in Nursing and Allied Health (MINAH) formulated and distributed by the American Society for Microbiology (ASM). Topics covered will prepare students for success on licensure exams such as the NCLEX-RN.
