Integrated Clinical Sciences. The Introduction to Integrated Clinical Sciences (ICS) course helps D1 students begin building the foundational clinical skills needed to provide safe and effective patient care. Students will develop these skills through Canvas presentations, assignments, quizzes, group breakouts, class discussions, presentations, and scheduled hands-on rotations. By the end of the course, students will have gained a range of essential skills, including: • Professionalism • Personal protective equipment, infection control and operatory maintenance • Ergonomics • Four-handed dentistry • Writing SOAP notes • Taking patient photographic and intra-oral images with an intra-oral camera • Navigating AxiUm by completing case-based exercises • Learning to operate a portable x-ray unit (Nomad) and certification • Taking radiographs with Nomad, digital sensors and panoramic x-rays • Radiographic interpretation • Observing, assisting, participating and applying skills as secondary providers in the clinic • The block will also introduce students to the concept that when faced with making ethical decisions, one must rely on an internal, personal values system, as well as external, organizational value systems such as the ADA Principles of Ethics and Code of Professional Conduct.
