This course introduces students to the systematic analysis of film and television, drawing from works in communication, media studies, film studies, television studies, and cultural studies. Popular film and television include a range of profitable movie franchises, series, and other media products that reach cross-cultural and global audiences, offering different types of audiovisual narratives. Possible genres to be considered include action-adventure, superheroes, fantasy, and science-fiction, among others. The course presents theoretical, critical, and pragmatic perspectives on popular film and television, considering them in connection to the cultural contexts and the media contexts that they emerge from. It also includes an exploration of their inter-relationships with new media developments, such as the expanding popularity of streaming platforms.
