Introduction to Visual Vernacular

Catalog description

This course introduces visual vernacular, a unique performance genre invented and developed by Deaf artists. Visual vernacular combines creative movement with cinematic techniques and visual-gestural communications. Topics include visual gestural communication, the history of visual vernacular, influential artists world-wide, and major techniques. Assignments include analysis of performances and kinesthetic exercises to develop students’ understanding of visual vernacular. Due to the nature of this subject, instruction is in ASL and voice interpreters will not be provided.
