Catalog description

Quantum mechanics has the potential to transform technologies used for computing, communication, and sensing, but it doesn’t require advanced theory to understand. This course introduces the basic concepts and mathematics of quantum mechanics and shows how quantum ideas can be applied to develop highly precise sensors, powerful computers, and new ways to simulate molecules and materials. The course is accessible for those who have never taken any quantum-related courses before and is intended for those who want to learn more about what goes on inside a quantum computer and other quantum technologies. This course discusses the practical challenges of building quantum devices and the variety of different approaches. Many simulation and visualization tools are used to explain fundamental quantum ideas, quantum experiments, and quantum computers. The course has emerging applications to the fields of engineering, computing, physics, chemistry and will be interesting to all those curious about how quantum technologies could transform society. The course also touches on the broader societal discourse around “quantum” and quantum technology in both popular media and academic settings.
