The microscope has proven itself to be an important tool for investigation since its invention in 1595. This course is designed to explore how to create magnified images of objects too small to be seen with the naked eye. Students will use a variety of microscopy techniques including differential interference contrast, fluorescence, phase contrast, reflected light, industrial, and polarized light. The course will investigate the applications of optical and digital enhancement techniques. Specimen preparation as well as electronic flash will be used to create stop-motion video. Assignments will allow students to devise appropriate photomicrographic approaches based on the data and intended use of the images.
