Linguistics of English for Academic Communication

Catalog description

Academic and professional communication has particular ways of using grammar and flow in abstracts, email communication, research paper introductions, and spoken presentations, among other genres. In this course, students will critically analyze a variety of academic texts to understand how language use varies across academic purposes and contexts. Students will apply this knowledge in their own reading, writing and speaking. The linguistic analysis includes both textuality (connections within a text) and intertextuality (connections to references, sources and audience). Students will demonstrate the ability to use varied sentence structure and lexicon strategically to construct and edit definitions, classifications, explanations, analyses, speeches and self-reflections.
