Catalog description

This course covers fundamental principles and applications of optoelectronic devices and systems, with emphasis on the electronic and optoelectronic properties of semiconductors as well as advanced optoelectronic device physics. It covers the interaction of light with semiconductor materials, the operation of key optoelectronic components, and their engineering applications in modern technology. Specifically, the course will cover the following topics: semiconductor physics for optoelectronics including crystal structure and device fabrication approach, electronic band structure properties in semiconductors; light-emitting diodes and laser diodes, photodetectors, solar cells, optical modulators, and fiber-optic communication systems. The course emphasizes both theoretical foundations and practical applications in engineering. Class projects allow students to apply what they have learned in a real-world context, enabling a deeper understanding of course the material.
