Topics covered are the history of the problems, the resulting societal reaction and legislation, and present day handling, minimizing, recycling, or disposing of materials historically treated as wastes. Emphasis is placed on those aspects in which the civil engineer plays a prominent role such as material recovery facilities, municipal solid waste landfills and hazardous waste permanent storage facilities, land application of municipal wastewater biosolids, composting, and other resource recovery and environmental protection engineering projects.
