Catalog description
Neurobiology is a branch of the life sciences that deals with the anatomy, physiology, and pathology of the nervous system. Neurobiology centers around the study of nerve cells and the organization of these cells into functional circuits that process information and mediate behavior. The course provides an in-depth understanding of how information is processed and stored in the brain, and delves into molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying neural functioning. Topics include the biology of cells in the nervous system; electrical and chemical signaling and the role of ion channels; biophysical principles and molecular mechanisms of synaptic transmission, synaptic plasticity and learning; organization of neuronal circuits during brain development, functioning and modification of neuronal systems through experience; mechanisms of complex behavior; disruption of the brain functions by injury and disease. Key methods employed in neurobiology research are also reviewed.
